The results of the survey on crime prevention work by municipalities in 2017 is now published.

The National Council for Crime Prevention and the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities conducted surveys in Finnish and Swedish on crime prevention work in municipalities. The survey was carried out starting 1 March 2017 and ending 28 April 2017. The response rate for the survey was good at 43 per cent. Responses were submitted by municipalities from around Finland of varying sizes. Finland’s largest municipalities submitted the greatest number of responses relative to their size and number.

The survey examined the implementation of local crime prevention work and cooperation in municipalities in early 2017. The survey is part of the implementation of Finland’s national crime prevention programme (2016) titled "Working Together for Safer and More Secure Communities". The purpose of the survey is to help in the development of local crime prevention work, and the responses can be utilised later on in the assessment of the national crime prevention programme.

The most interesting observations, challenges and development needs at the local level will be highlighted on the basis of the answers to this survey. In order to guarantee successful and broad-scoped local crime prevention work, municipalities must have local support both persons holding positions of trust and leading public administration personnel, as well as sufficient training, and a knowledge of good practices and the cost impacts of crime prevention.
